Angie (00:00)
Welcome back to Tails of Truth, where we tell the truth about veterinary medicine. I'm Dr. Angie and this is my co-host and veterinary nurse, Extraordinaire Jojo. And today we're talking about our dog fever. I want a dog so bad.
JoJo (00:15)
I want a dog so bad too. Actually I want a dog and a cat. I have I have puppy and cat fever.
Angie (00:19)
Yeah. I I don't need a dog.
I don't need one. And the thing is, do I want a dog all the time? Like I think about how expensive
JoJo (00:28)
Yeah.
Angie (00:29)
they are. I think about I can't take them to work with me. I mean, it would be a very
JoJo (00:33)
Why?
Angie (00:34)
specific dog that could go to work with me. Cause they're just like
JoJo (00:36)
Okay, well
the answer to your problems is to foster.
Angie (00:39)
I know. I don't need to I don't need
JoJo (00:39)
It solves the money problems.
It solves the temporary problem. But then your
Angie (00:44)
Yeah.
JoJo (00:45)
heart gets broken every time.
Angie (00:46)
I don't know. I fostered this one dog named Rudy and it was a pug. Do do you remember Rudy? Rudy
JoJo (00:50)
Rudy was cute. Mm-hmm.
Angie (00:53)
is living his best life. Best life. I just knew he had too much energy, which I mean, he had a long face and he needed a ton of exercise. But
JoJo (01:02)
W wh what does the
long long face have to do with his energy needs?
Angie (01:08)
'cause he could exercise. Like he could breathe.
JoJo (01:10)
Okay. okay. Okay. I didn't
bu I did not put this together. okay.
Angie (01:14)
You know what
ultimately made it so I'm like, I can't you can't be my dog is he ate his own poop.
but I found him his forever home. I'm still in touch with them. he's doing great. I don't think he eats his own poop anymore. I think
JoJo (01:25)
I was gonna ask
that. I'm like, does he s is that still a trait?
Angie (01:28)
No, I don't think he's doing it anymore. And I wonder if it's because he's a little fat. And I wonder because I like to keep my pugs lean. I wonder if he was so hungry.
JoJo (01:37)
Like get me out of this home where she starves me. Like I'll I'll eat poop till she lets me go somewhere
Angie (01:41)
I don't want to be lean. I'm a pug. I'm not meant to be lean.
JoJo (01:45)
where they feed me.
Angie (01:47)
Yeah, no, he
is living his best life, so
JoJo (01:51)
I
know the whole time I was in Europe, I thought, man, if Angie was here, because the dogs were so cute. I think I talked about
Angie (01:59)
They are
JoJo (02:00)
the dogs more than the scenery. But they were also like, I don't know, so their coats were so pretty. They had all those
Angie (02:07)
I know.
JoJo (02:08)
spaniels. There were so many long haired dachshunds, which I think are adorable. yeah, I'm
Angie (02:13)
Adorable. Yeah. Europeans know
how to do dogs. When I was in Chamonix on a climbing trip, it was just of course it's a very affluent area too, but like the beautiful dogs walking down the street, and they were all really
JoJo (02:27)
Yeah.
Angie (02:27)
well behaved. And I'm like, they know something we don't know.
So or they do something.
JoJo (02:32)
Yeah. Well this was the moment.
It's the moment that I was like, here it is. It's been almost n what's been nine months since Bodhi passed.
Angie (02:40)
Mm.
JoJo (02:42)
And I'm starting to feel that okay, maybe it's time.
Angie (02:45)
Is it? Yeah.
JoJo (02:47)
But then Sage I don't know what she's gonna do. And here's my problem. I think Sage would do fantastic with a dog. Fantastic. But I'm not sure how to introduce them in a way that any kind of rescue is gonna believe me. Because she's not
Angie (03:04)
right.
JoJo (03:05)
gonna be able to go there and meet a dog. Because she's scared of humans.
And I think the dog is gonna have to be a certain something introduced in a certain way. And I think everybody just needs to trust me about it.
Angie (03:14)
No.
JoJo (03:15)
and nobody's gonna do that. So I don't even know how I'm gonna get a dog.
Angie (03:17)
You need Brooke Fagel.
JoJo (03:20)
I'm gonna hire Brooke, for sure.
Angie (03:21)
Yeah.
To to help you with this. But
JoJo (03:24)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (03:25)
it's like when I think about getting a dog, I think about okay, what kind of dog? What's my lifestyle? How much will it cost? How much will it cost to insure them, to feed them, to get the veterinary care, to get the dog walker, to get the groomer. Every time I leave, I need to board them somewhere, have a dog sitter. It's a big line item to add to your budget.
JoJo (03:49)
Well didn't we do that on an episode? Isn't it somewhere between forty five thousand and sixty thousand for a lifetime? For
Angie (03:54)
What? A year? for a lifetime I was like
JoJo (03:57)
a year? my god, nobody can nobody can afford it. But no, over a lifetime.
Angie (04:00)
Yeah. For a lifetime.
Yeah, no, that makes sense. Yeah. Well, I really want a cavalier, you know, but like you
JoJo (04:07)
Yeah.
Angie (04:08)
have to have five grand to get one. And then you
JoJo (04:10)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (04:10)
have to groom them and that's expensive. Like every six weeks. Yeah.
JoJo (04:13)
So expensive. And I don't
want a puppy. I don't want a puppy. If we're just going back and forth because I really
Angie (04:20)
You don't.
JoJo (04:20)
like my sleep. I do not want to get up. So when we got Sage as a puppy, we had four teenage boys living at home. And so they would do the nighttime stuff.
Angie (04:30)
Yeah.
JoJo (04:31)
I don't wanna do it. I don't wanna do I don't wanna do the middle of the night stuff, but I feel like I need a puppy. Cause that's easy. Sage would definitely do a puppy.
Angie (04:39)
really? Like you feel sure about that? Well then you have to do it.
JoJo (04:41)
confident. A thousand percent. She'd probably be
over the moon. She would do a cat too.
Angie (04:46)
Aww but you're allergic to cats.
JoJo (04:49)
Mm, we have an asthmatic. Yeah.
Angie (04:52)
okay.
Yeah. Well, I mean, I think you have to get a puppy, Jojo.
Thank you.
JoJo (04:59)
You know how my life is right now. It's not the time, right? And
Angie (05:02)
Is not the time, no.
JoJo (05:03)
I I'm of the I want it to come to me the same way Bodhi did. I here she is. Sage's showing up on film. On film? What does that mean? She's like, hell yeah,
Angie (05:10)
She usually doesn't show up. So the fact that she is showing up right now, I don't know. She has something to say about it. We need an animal communicator.
JoJo (05:17)
it's puppy time.
Angie (05:19)
Yes.
JoJo (05:19)
She's lonely. She's sad. When we are all gone, she's getting really sad.
Angie (05:24)
okay. Well you have to do it soon. Okay.
JoJo (05:27)
Yeah. I now
Angie (05:29)
What would you do? W okay, would you first question, first decision tree, rescue or breeder?
JoJo (05:36)
Rescue. If it's rapid fire, if it's rapid fire, yeah, rescue. Cause I I really
Angie (05:38)
can't get you to Okay. Okay, Ram okay.
JoJo (05:43)
believe the dog's gonna find me.
Angie (05:44)
Wait, is the dog gonna find you because you go to the Humane Society or because you have been on petfinders.com?
JoJo (05:51)
you totally got me. Which it isn't like that pet finders feels like n I'm not in the dating world, but I feel like this is what hinge must feel like. Like you're like swipe,
nope, red flag, swipe, yep, green flag, swipe,
Angie (06:04)
A little bit. Yeah.
JoJo (06:05)
so cute. Nope, not my not my taste. Like, is
Angie (06:08)
Yeah.
JoJo (06:09)
that is that what it's like?
Angie (06:12)
Yeah, I mean it is what it's like to be on hinge.
JoJo (06:14)
So I'm
like hinging for dogs, yes. And then it's gonna speak to me and I'm gonna know and then I'm gonna have to meet it and all everything's gonna align and the rescue is gonna be like, It's okay that we don't meet your other dog
Angie (06:27)
my gosh. Yeah.
JoJo (06:29)
yeah.
Angie (06:29)
Well what kind of breeds would you be looking for? Or do you even think of it like breeds? Or do you have a more of like an aesthetic or what do you dream
JoJo (06:36)
Hmm.
Angie (06:37)
of?
JoJo (06:37)
Well, I really, really want to whippet or an Italian greyhound, which is not going to be found in a rescue. And that's only 'cause I want to dress him in sweaters.
Angie (06:46)
Okay, so you need a sight hound, so you can now will you knit the sweaters or will you just buy the sweaters? Okay.
JoJo (06:50)
God, no. Have you met me?
I have no patience for anything that is like sitting still. I'm not good
Angie (06:56)
Okay. Okay.
JoJo (06:57)
at that. unless it's trash reality TV. Then you can get me there. No, I don't know. I just think they're adorable, but I did see one at the Oktoberfest. Somebody was walking around their little Italian greyhound, and that dog was terrified. Its tail was tucked so far that it was touching its chest with its tail.
Angie (07:17)
Yeah, like they're always
trembling.
JoJo (07:19)
And its ears
are flat and it's like And I'm like, Mm, I don't know if that would be best for our family.
Angie (07:25)
No, no.
JoJo (07:26)
And
they're always like that. So really it's about the
Angie (07:28)
Always.
JoJo (07:29)
sweater.
Angie (07:30)
Okay, well what if you got like a Yorkie? You can put sweaters on Yorkis.
JoJo (07:34)
Yorkies are cute.
Angie (07:35)
But not for you.
JoJo (07:37)
I don't know. I feel like I'm just gonna
Angie (07:39)
I don't see you with a Yorkie.
JoJo (07:40)
know. But what I miss most about Bodhi, like in the physical form, is snuggling into his like really furry chest.
Angie (07:47)
Would you get another husky? Awww.
JoJo (07:50)
Yeah, definitely.
But not like a true husky because he wasn't like the he didn't have that undercoat that blows.
Angie (07:58)
he wasn't? He didn't?
JoJo (08:00)
No. So I think he must have had like some I don't know. Hi his
Angie (08:04)
Okay.
JoJo (08:05)
hair was just long and silky. I mean he shed, but it would come out in like dreads.
Angie (08:10)
Yeah.
Yeah.
JoJo (08:11)
But not
like full blown husky. I don't
Angie (08:13)
Cleoof.
JoJo (08:14)
know. How about you? 'Cause I just don't know. It's just gonna find me and then I'm gonna say yes and it's all gonna be in right timing and that's how it's gonna have to go. And that's just what I'm putting out into the world.
Angie (08:24)
Okay, okay, that's the construction, the architect.
JoJo (08:27)
And I will say yes,
yeah, when it shows up. I'm ready to say yes. And and keep swiping.
Angie (08:31)
Okay, well, I'm definitely not.
You're gonna keep swiping. Okay, yeah, I'm definitely not. I know that I can't. So this is what I've been doing in the meantime. Cause financially, I would want to, I mean, I would be open to rescue if I could find the breed, but I would want like certain breeds or certain sizes. I have been borrowing people's dogs while I'm at work. So yesterday we had a pug named Lucy and
instead of being in her cage, I said, No one puts Lucy in a cage. And I took her back to my office and I pretended like she was my dog all day. And she sat on my
lap when I was writing records. And then when I was seeing appointments, she sat in the bed by my desk. And I was like, She's mine. And she loved me and I loved her. And it was just that one day that we shared. And then she went home. And I was like, When you see your real mom.
You're gonna be so excited.
JoJo (09:27)
Right. She's like, Who's this crazy woman?
Angie (09:29)
Who's this lady? But she loved me. I
mean, it was better than sitting in a cage. She sat, she sat in the doctor's office.
JoJo (09:34)
Yeah, yeah. I
know that's total perk of being in a clinic.
Angie (09:39)
Yeah, and so I'm just borrowing people's dogs because I think that's more responsible.
JoJo (09:43)
You sound
so creepy.
Angie (09:47)
Do you think my clients are like 'cause I'll tell them I'm like, I have really bad puppy fever. I'm gonna take your dog to the back for the next fifteen minutes, I'm gonna pretend like your dog's my dog. Do you think that weirds people out or do you think they can appreciate it and they think it's funny?
JoJo (09:59)
I think everybody wants their vet to love their dog. Don't you think? Hope so. Yeah.
Angie (10:02)
Okay, good. So it's like I can get away with it for much longer.
JoJo (10:08)
my gosh. What I mean, would your girls want one?
Angie (10:12)
yeah, for sure. I
JoJo (10:13)
Yeah.
Angie (10:14)
I would I mean in perfect world, I get like a Cavalier King Charles. I love pugs, so I would not get a pug from a breeder. That is my line. Long face
JoJo (10:20)
Yeah. But only long face pugs.
Angie (10:25)
pugs from a rescue. yeah, I love them so much. But I also, you know, when people like every day, people bring me little pieces or little samples of diarrhea, and they're like, my dog kept me up all night with diarrhea.
And I'm like, Yep, I'm good. It like it's like birth control for dog fever.
JoJo (10:46)
Yeah. That's so true. Although I've
been like going back and forth between here in Texas and my dad has a dog and it's like a 10 year old little rescue that found them. And I'm kind of obsessed. It's just I don't know. So there's something there. And and it's nothing there's nothing about her that is like extra special or anything, but I think it's the feeling of I'm needed and wanted.
And she's just so happy
Angie (11:15)
Yes.
JoJo (11:16)
that we're going for a walk. And she's so happy that I'm feeding her. And it's the whole
Angie (11:21)
Yeah.
JoJo (11:22)
butt wag that I'm just like, yeah, it's that. It's the
Angie (11:27)
Mm.
JoJo (11:28)
w being wanted piece.
Angie (11:29)
Yes, I know. Like when I walked into my office and Lucy would see me and then she would do little spins. I'm like, my gosh, you're spinning for me. Yes, in that moment.
JoJo (11:37)
Mm. Yeah. Doesn't it just make you feel special? Cats cats
don't do that as often, but some do.
Angie (11:43)
Yeah. My cats do. My cats like, What are we doing? You're home, thank God. Like yeah. They're they're in.
JoJo (11:47)
Yeah, rub all over you, cheek rubs. Yeah, yeah, yeah. See, that's
I feel that's riskier in some ways to adopt a cat because I'm just like, What
Angie (11:56)
Yes.
JoJo (11:56)
it what if? Like my mom's cats are so aloof. They're just like, Whatever. You're here.
Angie (12:01)
Well, I could help you
pick out a non-aloof cat.
JoJo (12:04)
Yeah, I if I'm ever gonna get a cat, it's gonna have to be snuggly.
Angie (12:09)
Yes, we can definitely get you a snuggly cat.
JoJo (12:11)
Like
a salivator. I'm so happy I'm just gonna drool all over you. I'm so down. Yeah. And muffin maker. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's gotta be one of those. I think I can make
Angie (12:16)
yeah. There are plenty of those out there. They just like want to be on your lap and Yes. Y yeah. Totally.
JoJo (12:24)
that happen. But I think Sage would love a cat. I think that would be her preference.
Angie (12:29)
Okay. Well, that could be in your future too. A dog and a cat.
JoJo (12:33)
Yeah.
Angie (12:33)
You could have two dogs and one cat.
JoJo (12:35)
Yeah. Anyone listening wanna let me adopt a dog without meeting me or the kids or Sage
Angie (12:43)
I mean, they could bring the dog for a home visit. That's what my when I adopted my pug, that's what they did. They brought him over.
JoJo (12:50)
Yeah, but I
feel like she's gonna need like a solid forty eight hours.
Angie (12:55)
yeah. To warm up.
JoJo (12:57)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (12:58)
Yeah, that makes sense. I bet someone would. Yeah.
JoJo (13:01)
Yeah, I gotta find them.
Angie (13:02)
absolutely.
JoJo (13:03)
Now I wish I could turn my camera so everybody could see her. She's all snuggled up on a pillow. Cute. She does, she's sad.
Angie (13:08)
See she wants one. She wants she wants a puppy. Aww.
my gosh. Maybe I can help you shop for a dog so I will stop looking at them.
JoJo (13:18)
Well, I've sent you some.
that one that I sent you, it was so cute, you guys. It was a a white face, freckled on one side with a one floppy ear and one up
Angie (13:27)
Yeah.
JoJo (13:27)
ear and a spot eye. And I was just like, I love a white dog. I love a white haired dog. Like a bully breed. Ooh,
Angie (13:34)
Yeah. Would you get like a Westie? yeah.
JoJo (13:38)
a weso. I've never I haven't thought about that. Westies are cute.
Angie (13:40)
I love Westies so
JoJo (13:41)
It
Angie (13:41)
Yeah.
JoJo (13:41)
will find me because now we put it out there.
Angie (13:44)
We put it out there. And I don't need a dog to find me right now, even though I want one.
So that's where I am.
JoJo (13:49)
Yeah, you've had fever for a little bit.
Angie (13:51)
Yeah. I haven't lived with a dog in six years.
JoJo (13:55)
What do your cats think?
Angie (13:57)
Seven years. I think they would be terrified. I'd have to get a very
specific kind of dog. I think that would be really hard for them. And that's one thing my oldest daughter says. I'm like, I'm having fever. And she's like, the cats would kill you.
You know? And so I mean, I think for the right dog, like if I really wanted to do it, I think I could. I may maybe like a cavi puppy or something. that the cats could raise, but I financially and time wise, whatever. Like I don't need I don't need to do it. But just mean
JoJo (14:25)
Yeah, it's not the
right time for me yet either, but I just am open. So here's what I need then. Anybody who's listening,
Angie (14:30)
Okay. What do you mean?
JoJo (14:33)
can you just like send us pictures of your dogs?
Angie (14:36)
Yeah.
JoJo (14:38)
It makes me happy. I
Angie (14:38)
Yeah.
JoJo (14:40)
love seeing other people's dogs.
Angie (14:42)
I know. It does help the dog fever. I'm into
JoJo (14:44)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (14:45)
Well, thank you for listening. We'd love to hear about your favorite breeds where you rescue.
JoJo (14:51)
How your dog found you?
Angie (14:52)
Yes. Your story. maybe you're in the same position as me. Maybe you want a dog or you want another dog, but you know, like financially you're just not, and then stage of life, you're just not in a position to do it. Tell me I'm not alone.
JoJo (15:05)
or think of the creative way that we I can make this happen that I'm not seeing. Yeah.
Angie (15:10)
Right. Yes. Like
if you work for a rescue, how can we do this? How can we do this?
JoJo (15:14)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (15:14)
Thanks for listening. Talk to you soon.
