Our Confessions: Overdoses, Shame & Chaos
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Even veterinary professionals aren't immune to chaos and medical errors. In this episode, Dr. Angie and JoJo get vulnerable about the mistakes, emergencies, and shame spirals that happened with their own pets, including a medication dosing error, an unexpected ER visit after a dog ate a pot cookie, and a cat dental emergency that came with major sticker shock. They talk through what it actually feels like to mess up in an industry where you're expected to know better, why full mouth dental x-rays under anesthesia matter, how ASPCA Animal Poison Control works, and what to do if your dog may have eaten THC. Vulnerable, honest, and possibly even relatable.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Even experienced veterinarians and vet techs can make dosing errors, and ASPCA Animal Poison Control is a resource available to any pet parent, not just veterinary professionals
- Full mouth dental x-rays under anesthesia can catch problems like tooth resorption that aren't visible without them
- Dog THC toxicity is rarely fatal but can cause serious discomfort, including body temperature swings, vomiting, and disorientation
- CBD may help counteract THC toxicity in dogs by displacing it from cannabinoid receptors
- Pet insurance (the hosts both use Lemonade) can reimburse emergency costs quickly
- Veterinary professionals can feel shame asking their own colleagues questions, the same way pet parents sometimes do
- Veterinary medicine is expensive even for veterinarians
- Medical errors happen to even the best veterinarians and vet staff
- Mistakes happen with pet parents. This is a judgement free zone for all of it

Angie (00:00)
Welcome back to Tails of Truth, where we tell the truth about veterinary medicine. I'm Dr. Angie, and this is my co-host and veterinary nurse, Extraordinaire Jojo. And today we're telling some truthful tales about our own pets. Mmm.
JoJo (00:15)
Our own pets. This feels
scary. I have this idea
Angie (00:20)
Sorry.
JoJo (00:20)
that we're on some kind of pedestal that if we're professionals, we must be doing gold star five star plus plus plus care with our own pets.
And I'm here to tell you the last two weeks with my dog Sage has not gone well.
Angie (00:38)
And to be fair, you weren't there. Were you there?
JoJo (00:40)
Fair.
No, but I also maybe mismanaged a little bit. And
Angie (00:45)
Well
JoJo (00:45)
you also have had some experiences.
Angie (00:47)
well w just a little preview. I overdosed my girlfriend's dog with metronidazole my god, right.
JoJo (00:54)
I'm not laughing. That was not a smile for everybody to f get on here and be
like, my gosh, you just said something serious and you laughed through it. That was an
Angie (01:01)
Yeah. No we're
JoJo (01:02)
uncomfortable laugh of like, I feel for you. That's so painful. yes.
Angie (01:06)
No, we're gonna giggle because everything was fine. The dog is
fine. I am fine. Our relationship is fine.
JoJo (01:15)
You know
the worst thing about that sentence? You
Angie (01:19)
Mm-hmm.
JoJo (01:19)
prescribe metronidazole.
Angie (01:24)
I know. my God,
JoJo (01:25)
Yeah.
Angie (01:26)
right? I'm in I am in metronidazole jail. I mean, yeah, you're right. You're right. Put me in cuffs. Like I'm in take me straight to jail. Yeah. I want to well first
JoJo (01:34)
Yeah, no no. Yes. Where do we start? Well you started.
You just started. You wanna tell that story?
Angie (01:45)
Okay. Okay. We're gonna we're gonna start the story. Okay, so I've been practicing for about 20 years. and my worst nightmare is prescribing the wrong dose. And I have a lot of anxiety about this to the point where sometimes I will use medication calculators and then I will calculate it myself. And sometimes I'll do it.
Two or three times. And I'll know, like a 50-pound dog will get 50 milligrams of carprofen twice a day or 100 milligrams once a day. But sometimes, just in case I went like crazy or like became, I don't know, silly and stupid. I don't
know. I will put it in the calculator. And it's like after 20 years, I still, because there are a few drugs where you're like,
I
don't want to mess this up. And so Tammy's dogs, one of her dogs went to Missouri with her a couple weeks ago, maybe three weeks ago, came back and has had intermittent diarrhea. And I have personally helped her scrub her carpet of like
blowout. And she has like white carpet. We need to talk about why she has white carpet, but it's very beautiful. But yeah, no, I know.
JoJo (02:54)
for yikes. Like just in
life, yikes.
Angie (02:59)
Yeah, it was in her basement. And so anyway, so I'm helping her. So like I I feel her with the diarrhea. Well then suddenly the other dog starts getting diarrhea and like pooped all over her bed. She had to like throw away her pillows.
JoJo (03:13)
So it's just like
explosive, urgent.
Angie (03:18)
yeah, like it's everywhere. So I'm like, okay, and then she's at work. I'm going to work and she's like, hey, I'm in diarrhea hell. And I'm like, you're you're swimming in
JoJo (03:30)
With it.
Angie (03:32)
diarrhea. And I'm like, I bet they have Giardia. Cause then I went through, I was like, they're on heartworm prevention, which that takes care of intestinal parasites, doesn't take care of giardia I'm like, okay, what do you pick up in Missouri?
And so I'm like, I bet they have giardia. Now, normally you would want to confirm that. And for all my patients, I do, but I'm like, well, that's probably what it is. I want to save her from the diarrhea hell. So I'm like, why don't we do metronidazole and panacur? Let's just knock this out. There's no way, hardly any way, that giardia is gonna survive this. So that day I'm really tired because I just got back from Hawaii.
So I'm like jet lagged and I'm so busy trying to get caught up. And so in between, I'm at work like creating her file and like putting the dogs in. And so I'm like, this is great. I can bring some drugs to her after work. And so I do that. And one of her dogs is 25 pounds and one of her dogs is 50 pounds. And in between patients, I was just trying to do like a little thing here and a little thing there to get these meds prescribed.
And I prescribed 500 milligram metronidazols to them both. At least that's what she said. I haven't been back to work to look to see if I actually did that. I it's possible that she looked at the bottle and She saw five hundreds on one and two fifties on the other, but I'm gonna take her word for it. So she sends me this voice memo, like, hey, I'm on my way to work. And, you know, I just gave the dogs their medicine. And I, you know, it's I thought it was interesting that you gave them both five hundreds.
And I'm like, my God, why would you why did you give that? But so I
took a deep breath before wanting to just literally die. And I thought, I was like,
I was
JoJo (05:20)
Doing a lot of exhaling this episode.
Angie (05:23)
like, what time exactly did you give this? Because I'm on my way back from dropping Fiona off at the dentist down in South Denver. And so I'm like looking at my watch, thinking.
Okay, looking at traffic, how quickly can I get there? Can I make this dog vomit? Are we doing
JoJo (05:40)
Totally.
Angie (05:41)
activated charcoal? What are we doing? So she actually doesn't know this part, but if she watches this podcast, she's gonna know. So I'm like thinking, so I was like, hey, I'm just gonna I so I called her and I was like, I'm just gonna like check to see if that's a toxic dose. And it was like 43 mgs per kg is what I gave. And you wanna give 25 mgs per kg. So I'm like, okay.
I look up on VIN I pull over because I'm on the highway. And it's like, metronidazole toxicosis can happen from 40 mgs per kg to 120. And I was just like,
my God. And so I'm like just gunning it to her house, thinking, like, my gosh, if I ruin her dog, this relationship is over. And I happen to really like what's happening right
JoJo (06:27)
Yeah.
Angie (06:28)
now. And so I'm like, this is it. And so
I call the ASPCA on the way because they have a great poison control. Like that's what veterinarians
JoJo (06:36)
They do. Yeah.
Angie (06:37)
do, just so you know. And at home, like as a pet parent, you have the same access to it.
JoJo (06:43)
Absolutely. It's hanging on my fridge. It's like f fifty dollars or something. I'm so outdated.
Angie (06:46)
$110, by the way. Yeah. Yeah. $110.
And then you have access to their toxicologist, which is like amazing. but they put me on hold for like 15 minutes. And like the whole time I was just like deep breathing. Yes.
JoJo (07:00)
Fifteen minutes while you're worrying like
Angie (07:03)
Cause that's like as soon as they had somebody. And I kept thinking, I bet people overdose their dogs on metronidazole all the time. I bet. Like I just kept thinking.
You've never seen, I've never personally seen metronitazole toxicosis, but it can happen just like at regular doses too. So anyway, so I get a hold of them and they're like, it's probably gonna be fine, but it might cause vomiting and diarrhea. And I was like, she's gonna kill me. Like with more diarrhea.
JoJo (07:30)
Yeah. You solve the diarrhea problem with more diarrhea and vomiting.
Angie (07:36)
I know. And then like I had all these terrible thoughts of like,
It's time to quit veterinary medicine. You should never be
JoJo (07:42)
Of course.
Angie (07:43)
allowed to practice ever again. And like what a terrible mistake. Like you could have really hurt her. I had to really talk myself off the ledge because I really try not to make mistakes. Usually my mistakes are forgetting to call someone back, writing right instead of left in the medical record. not like overdosing a dog on metronidazole
JoJo (08:06)
How does it feel to admit that?
Angie (08:10)
like to her immediately?
JoJo (08:12)
just to yourself, to her
on this podcast, like
like those are the
Angie (08:17)
yeah.
JoJo (08:17)
things that we like to like hide. And all of us have one.
Angie (08:20)
Yeah.
We do. And now at 20 years in, I'm like, okay, here's the time. I've never overdosed an animal. If anything, I I'm pretty good at underdosing. But like I've never I've it's never happened to me. And I'm like, okay, well, and I remember do you know Kevin Fitzgerald?
JoJo (08:39)
I know the name.
Angie (08:40)
Okay, so he's a comedian in Denver. He's a veterinarian. He used to work at Alameda East, but now I think he works somewhere else. But he tours around veterinary schools.
And I remember he came down to AM when I was there. because he at the time he was like kind of a big star on remember that reality TV show that was at Alameda East and it was like emergency vets. And he
JoJo (08:59)
Yes, yes.
Angie (09:00)
has like the white hair with the mustache and yes.
JoJo (09:03)
yeah, I know who you're talking about. Yeah.
Angie (09:04)
And he told us, I I remember like maybe we were like out at a bar with him and he was like, You're gonna hurt something. Like it's and it's gonna be your fault. And I've made little mistakes here and there.
but like this was the first time I was like, my God, I I could have hurt this dog.
JoJo (09:21)
Yeah.
Angie (09:21)
but I remember him saying, like, yeah, it's just part of it. Like anytime you do something that much and you're just human.
JoJo (09:29)
Yeah.
Angie (09:30)
And I was dealing with two different dogs, and I just, I probably on the drop down forgot which dog I was filling and hit the 500 instead of the 250. They're right
JoJo (09:40)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (09:40)
next to each other. Or maybe I thought I hit the 250 and I hit, like.
I've like gone through this.
JoJo (09:45)
Or you said like
five hundreds cut in half. Something no. Yeah. I know with
Angie (09:50)
No. Yeah, I wouldn't have done that. But yeah.
JoJo (09:53)
these moments, because again we've all had them. Like
Angie (09:57)
Yeah.
JoJo (09:57)
I I remember a moment for me that I was just like, man, that it it rocks you, at least for me. It rocked me so much that I became hyper vigilant again. So I feel like they're wake up calls sometimes
Angie (10:10)
Yes.
JoJo (10:10)
of like I'm too busy, I'm too distracted.
You know. 'Cause it scared me.
Angie (10:15)
Yes. Yeah.
JoJo (10:17)
I didn't sleep for weeks. Even though the animal
Angie (10:19)
Yes.
JoJo (10:19)
was fine. It just was terrifying.
Angie (10:22)
Yeah. And I'm like, I'm like, Angie, you've gotta let yourself be human. And that like no one was hurt. Like her dog was totally fine. She just didn't
JoJo (10:31)
Yeah.
Angie (10:31)
give the dose later. I mean, I I went over to her house. The dog was like, hey, I'm great. Everything is great. Didn't have vomiting, didn't have diarrhea, didn't have a single symptom. But man. Yeah. I know me.
JoJo (10:42)
Ugh, sorry that happened. That was just one part of
it because in that story I heard you say, I just dropped off Fiona. So
Angie (10:49)
Yes. Okay.
So see a few weeks ago I needed to take the cats into the clinic to get blood work because last time I checked for which was over a year ago. This is a little embarrassing, but I checked blood work for Fritz and his kidney values were high and I ignored it and did nothing. 'Cause it was just for so many reasons. And you can come at me in the comments if you want. I get it.
but he's been healthy and like fine. And so I was just I kept thinking, I'll recheck it. And then like kind of a year went by. And so I was like, okay, we're gonna get, and the cats were overdue for their rabies vaccines. And so I'm like, we're just gonna get everyone caught up right now. And so I took both the cats to the clinic. I got their blood drawn, and then I gave them both three-year rabies vaccines. And they both came home and then proceeded to not eat or drink.
and be lethargic for like two days. And I was like
JoJo (11:46)
Wow Again we're laughing.
Angie (11:50)
I know. I mean, because sometimes in life,
if you can't laugh at the irony of all of it, yeah.
JoJo (11:57)
Yeah, both of them.
Angie (11:59)
Both of them. And then I had like all this paranoia. Was there something wrong with that tray? And I know there's nothing wrong because I had been vaccinating from that tray days before. But then the next rabies vaccine I gave, I'm like, and it's the pure vax for your like, we're this
JoJo (12:15)
Yeah.
Angie (12:16)
is the top of the line stuff, but I was like,
Anyway, so they eventually did fine, but now I know they're both really sensitive to that. but also like we have rabies in Boulder County. I
JoJo (12:29)
yeah.
Angie (12:29)
I don't really I don't wanna hang out with that that anxiety.
JoJo (12:35)
Yeah, let me just tell you that I have a girlfriend here who her daughter's cat caught a bat in the house and all the roommates had to go get rabies vaccines until they they
Angie (12:48)
'cause was the bat rabid?
JoJo (12:50)
sent it out. But you have like that s very short period of time where you're supposed to go get stuff done. And so I'm like, mm
Angie (12:56)
really? Actually didn't know that.
JoJo (12:58)
Yeah, and the cat's on quarantine like forty five days. The bat ended up not having rabies, but it does happen and they were in the city.
Angie (13:05)
I know. And that's why I, I just after it happened to my patient last year, I'm like, I'm, you know, I was like, okay,
JoJo (13:10)
Yeah.
Angie (13:10)
so everyone's caught up. Okay, well, that's fine. So they have their vaccine reaction. Well, my kitchen floods and we had to demo a lot of the kitchen. And so there's just like, the floorboard out and my under sink water filter is like out and about and like Fiona is somehow, like right before I go to work, like the week before we're supposed to go to Hawaii.
She somehow like lacerates her paw, like in between her toes. And suddenly
JoJo (13:36)
Yeah.
Angie (13:37)
there's just like blood all over the floor. And I'm like, I have to leave to go to work. So I just like scoop her up, put her in the carrier, and take her to work. And it turns out I had to sew up her paw, which was like really stressful. I mean, the actual sewing wasn't, but having my cat anesthetized, I am such a baby. I think the
JoJo (13:54)
Huh.
Angie (13:54)
staff was like, we don't even like you right now. And
JoJo (13:58)
Did you
turn all mean?
Angie (14:00)
I was like, my God. And j we have the best staff at Boulders Natural. And Whitney was like, Yeah, I don't love her pressures. And I'm like, why don't you love her pressures? Yes. You know how I get and I'm like, I don't
JoJo (14:10)
That sounds like you when you're stressed. Yes. It's like a one short sentence
of like you're like, man, I'm in so much trouble. Like, what did I do? I can remember
Angie (14:23)
Yeah.
JoJo (14:24)
once when I said something in the car about like a doctor's name. Why would you give that name to her? And I'm like, I didn't say that I did. I can just think that
Angie (14:33)
I know.
JoJo (14:34)
might have been the one. So yeah, I know. Yeah, those moments.
Angie (14:36)
Yes. And
Teresa, my gosh. I she was the nurse that was like trying to just she just like knew she's like, let me calm you down. She just
JoJo (14:47)
Maybe you should wait in the
lobby.
Angie (14:50)
Even though you're sewing up your own cat I I did it 'cause I was yeah, I think I was
JoJo (14:53)
you did that you did the suture. Yeah. that's fun.
Angie (14:58)
the only doctor on that day and I was like or no, maybe
JoJo (15:00)
How many sutures can you
do between her little toe pads?
Angie (15:04)
I think I like three or four in there, but I had to like trim up a bunch of the skin to like I don't know. It was a little more involved
JoJo (15:09)
Really did it.
Angie (15:10)
than I thought. And then because it you can't sew directly to the pad very well because then the tension from the pad to the skin isn't gonna be right
JoJo (15:20)
Yeah.
Angie (15:21)
and it's gonna pull out. So anyway, so I did that. And you know, her teeth, she has some tartar on there. Not bad, but I was like, Can you just clean and
X ray, do full mouth x rays and I'm gonna go see this appointment. But it turns out she had this big hole in one of her lower teeth. And so
JoJo (15:37)
This
is why we do full mouth dental rads under anesthesia for those who want to avoid it. Cause you didn't know it was there. Mm-hmm.
Angie (15:44)
I didn't know she had this. No, I
thought she was gonna have something, underneath the tartar. No. So she has tooth resorption. So I'm immediately like, my God. And I don't do procedures. Like I'll sew my own cats up. Like that's fine. But like I am not gonna do oral surgery on my own cat, nor am I gonna let anyone else in the area do it because of how awful I am. Like
Like, you know what I mean? Like, I needed
JoJo (16:13)
boy. Yeah.
Angie (16:15)
to protect Liv Brockmann from me. Like it
JoJo (16:20)
You're like
bride zilla what's the word for it? It's like when you get stressed, what is yeah.
Angie (16:24)
I don't know. I'm like helicopter mom.
Yeah. I just couldn't do it. Like Teresa had to calculate. She's like, what kind of you know, induction do you want? I'm like, I don't know. What kind of induction do I want?
JoJo (16:36)
Well,
that's why I call you when I'm in the emergency room. I'm like, I know this is really simple and I can't make a decision.
Angie (16:42)
I know, yeah, you're just like, I don't know. Just so I was like,
JoJo (16:44)
Yeah, paralyzed.
Angie (16:46)
so I took her down to Apex Dentistry
JoJo (16:49)
Yeah.
Angie (16:49)
and Don Beebee has been doing my animals dentistry for years. And I remember when I would take my last batch of cats, he's like, I know you can do this yourself. And I'm like, I know, but like I don't want to. I know that they're getting the best of the best. So I make an appointment immediately to see him. And it was actually so great to catch up with him. But
I'm hoping we can get him on the podcast because he's like he's my favorite. I love him so much. And so I get down there yesterday. I had to catch Fiona, which we need a whole episode on how to get your cat in the crate. Okay. In the cat
JoJo (17:23)
Yeah.
Angie (17:24)
carrier. It's we have a problem. That's another episode. But okay, so I get her down there and he looks at it and he's like, Yeah, that's a really strange place. And I'm like, I know, right? And he's like, Well, it's time to take it out.
So then they hand me an estimate. And I'm thinking, like, of course this is gonna be more expensive than if you were to do it in private practice. Like you would think this is gonna be a thousand dollars to do in private practice. maybe a little bit more. And the nurse comes in after, Dr. Beebe and I are kind of catching up, and he leaves and she comes in and the estimate is thirty five hundred to forty five hundred.
JoJo (18:02)
Hmm, for a single
Angie (18:03)
And I'm like
JoJo (18:04)
tooth extraction. 'Cause you've already done the cleaning.
Angie (18:07)
Already cleaned full mouth x-rays. And so I was like, what is going on here?
JoJo (18:09)
Yeah. So just an extraction under anesthesia. Wait,
what did was there a breakdown of that? What was the
Angie (18:18)
Yes.
JoJo (18:18)
majority of the cost?
Angie (18:20)
Well, I kind of like blacked out for just a minute.
JoJo (18:25)
You're like, that's a whole nother week of work. Yeah.
Angie (18:28)
Yeah. Not I
mean I not even. Like I couldn't even make that. But I but then she looked at me and she's like, Do you have pet insurance? And I'm like, Of course I have pet insurance. I can't afford this.
JoJo (18:39)
Yeah. Crazy that you work
in an industry and you have to have pet insurance.
Angie (18:45)
Yeah. But they do CTs they do a C T of the teeth of all the teeth. And I don't have access to it. They're like, it's gonna take us five days to upload it. But they've recreated her whole entire head. They look in her sinuses. They look in her inner ear.
JoJo (19:00)
Wait, do they do this for every extraction or specifically for kitties with resorption?
Angie (19:05)
I didn't ask him and I should have,
JoJo (19:06)
Okay.
Angie (19:07)
so I experienced that kind of sheepish feel of I don't want to look like an here. And I, if you need to bleep that out, bleep, I am sorry.
JoJo (19:15)
Yeah. you said a bad word.
Angie (19:21)
But like I didn't I felt like, well, for one, I'm like, my God, if this is what he's recommending, this is what I should do. And then there was part of me that's like,
We've been doing this for so many years and never needed that. And then I was like, Angie, you sound old. Like, you know what I mean? Because veterinarians
JoJo (19:41)
Yeah.
Angie (19:42)
older than me would say, Well, we haven't been taking x-rays and everything's been fine. And so, kind of this storm of guilt, fear. I didn't want to look like I wasn't valuing his services, but part of me was like, Can you just take out the tooth?
JoJo (19:56)
Yeah.
Angie (19:56)
But it all happens so fast because they hand you this estimate and then they're like, Can you sign it? And
JoJo (20:02)
Yeah.
Angie (20:02)
for I know what it's like for me to ask her.
JoJo (20:05)
Do do you think they're
giving you better care because you're a veterinarian, that they're like, you wanna do this service?
Angie (20:11)
I don't know. And here's the thing if we have him on the podcast, we could ask him. Like he's so cool.
JoJo (20:15)
Yeah. Well and what did they
learn from the C T? I know they looked at all those things. Did And how does the C
Angie (20:20)
Well, they learn that her her mouth's perfect. Like except for that one too.
JoJo (20:25)
T work? Like I'm trying to think about that. They're just putting her in a little machine? Or is it like mobile? What is it? Yeah.
Angie (20:29)
And that's where I I have no idea. And I was like,
my God. And she's like, if you want to stay today, you could watch this. And I was like, I'll come back another day and watch someone else's animal.
JoJo (20:40)
Yeah.
Angie (20:41)
But I kind of want to know now. And I love dentistry
JoJo (20:43)
Yeah.
Angie (20:44)
so much. And so I'm for this. But I'm like, okay, also heads up, when I send people to the dentist, now it's
JoJo (20:50)
They might get an estimate.
Angie (20:52)
they're gonna get an estimate like this. Now it didn't end up being that much.
It
JoJo (20:57)
Okay.
Angie (20:57)
ended up being like two thousand dollars, which honestly to get I mean, that's like the top of the line stuff. They have like an anesthesiologist,
whatever he's doing is always the best. And I I so love that. Like she got the best care. and I have insurance. So I have to pay a $250 deductible and they cover 80%. So it's not that it was nothing for me, but
I want her to have everything she ever needs, like everybody else does. But I really could feel the shame and the feeling of like, my gosh, if I ask if this is really necessary, are they gonna be like, you suck? But I don't
JoJo (21:33)
Yeah.
Angie (21:34)
and I don't think they would, but I immediately felt sheepish and small.
JoJo (21:39)
Mm.
Angie (21:39)
And then I got in the car and I'm like, should I call them back and ask them to not put that on? And then like I went through.
Then I was like running all the numbers of okay, the CT was $850. And then I was like, what if they find something in there?
'cause it was such a strange presentation of tooth resorption. And I'm like, what if what if they find something else? And like, what if she has something in her sinuses? And I just wanted to fit in too. So I'm like, well, this is what we're doing now.
This is standard of care. You didn't know it was standard of care, but it is. Yeah.
JoJo (22:07)
Wow. I mean
I think we have to experience that sometimes to be better stewards for our clients.
Angie (22:15)
Yes. Yes. And they did not make it optional to do that CT. But I didn't ask, of course.
JoJo (22:22)
Mm-hmm.
Angie (22:23)
They didn't say this was an optional thing. And so I I don't know. But you you know what? Maybe you and I can go hang out for an afternoon. He wants
JoJo (22:31)
I would love that. I
Angie (22:33)
us to. I used to do that because he helped me do better dentistry when I was a baby vet. So I
JoJo (22:38)
Yeah. I I would
love to see where everything is at now.
Angie (22:43)
Yes.
Then you and I could have hang time. Yeah. We could
JoJo (22:44)
Yeah. Yeah, we need that.
Angie (22:48)
go hang out. Anyways, so that's the story. The tooth came out. She's doing great. Everything's amazing. Tammy's dog is not dead.
JoJo (22:57)
Yay That's
all good and you're still
Angie (23:03)
It's all good.
JoJo (23:03)
practicing.
Angie (23:04)
I'm still practicing.
JoJo (23:06)
And worthy of practicing.
Angie (23:07)
And totally worthy of practicing. Like everything
JoJo (23:10)
Yeah.
Angie (23:10)
is fine. Okay, now it's your turn.
Yes.
JoJo (23:16)
kinda have the opposite experience of you where I feel like I feel like an idiot for bringing my dog in. Not
like okay. I was in Guatemala. Like how do I tell this story without outing my pet sitter? yeah, I think I kinda have to, who by the way, is my kid. And by kid I
Angie (23:34)
I think you're outing your pet sitter Yeah. Mm-hmm. Complication.
JoJo (23:42)
mean my young adult.
son. So I was in Guatemala and one of my kids flew home from Guatemala and came home and he said, Sage doesn't look well. Something seems off. And he's like, But I have an appointment and I'll be back. And two hours later he's like, Sage is not well. Something is really wrong with her.
She is stoned out of her mind, can't walk
Angie (24:07)
Mm, mm.
JoJo (24:08)
straight, eyes are so dilated,
and he's there with his band banging drums, playing guitar, all the things, and she's just like flinching at every noise.
And has been doing this for three
Angie (24:22)
she's sound sensitive.
JoJo (24:24)
to four hours. And so I get said pet sitter on the phone. And I'm like, I hear Sage is not well. And he's like, she's fine. I'm like, is there any chance? Like I'm trying to figure out she's not fine. She cannot walk. And I'm like, is there any chance that she got into THC? He like, No, no chance at all. And I'm like and
Angie (24:46)
Hmm.
JoJo (24:47)
I'm like, Well then that's really concerning.
Like something is happening. And I said, I know that you made some THC cookies. I happen to know this. Where are said cookies? And he's like, there was only one left. And we put it in the fridge. And I said, Great, show it to me in the fridge. And he's like, it's not in the fridge. Okay. He's like, the wrapper is under the the couch. And I'm like, Okay.
So now I'm thinking how much THC is in this because this kid he's a pothead, for lack
Angie (25:19)
Mm-hmm.
JoJo (25:19)
of a better word. Like, I don't know how he does as much pot as he does. And anybody wants to come at me and judge me, I dare you. You do not know the journey I've been on with this kid.
Angie (25:30)
No, I wouldn't do it.
JoJo (25:32)
yeah, don't. I I'll I'll bring you here. And you will have to parent. And and
Angie (25:36)
Yeah, yeah.
JoJo (25:39)
yeah.
We don't need to go into my life journey with this kid. And anyhow, so he's like, There's anywhere between 80 and 120 milligrams of THC per cookie. And I was like, Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me? Yeah. I don't know, Angie. I don't know. I'm like.
Angie (25:53)
Can we stop for just one minute? Like what human can take that much? Like who
who was consuming these cookies?
JoJo (26:04)
the band and there were a lot of cookies and the cookies have been gone over days. So I don't know. I think it must have been quite the party at my house. That was not supposed to happen either. And
Angie (26:15)
Yeah, yeah.
JoJo (26:17)
he got outed by his brother. So then he was really mad at said brother for outing him.
Everybody out of the house. The dog needs to be taken care of. So anyhow, I think, okay, we're gonna ride this out. I'm sure she she had a toxicity, but to die from THC is like it's ridiculous. You have to have like three thousand milligrams per kilogram. It's it's
Angie (26:38)
Yeah.
JoJo (26:39)
an exorbitant amount of THC. But is she uncomfortable? She's hella uncomfortable.
Angie (26:41)
Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
JoJo (26:44)
She is having not a good time. And so, yeah, go for it.
Angie (26:46)
Yes, and she has
so many more THC receptors
JoJo (26:50)
Yeah.
Angie (26:51)
than a human does. So like you can imagine if you've ever used THC, taking a one hundred milligrams is an insane dose. And then a
JoJo (26:59)
Insane.
Angie (27:00)
it's more insane for a dog because they have so many more THC receptors. So go ahead.
JoJo (27:04)
She's
a third of my weight and I take 2.5 milligrams. So she is
Angie (27:08)
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
JoJo (27:11)
not having a good time. So I'm just checking
Angie (27:13)
No, no.
JoJo (27:14)
in every 30 minutes or so of like what's her temperature? Is she regulating
Angie (27:16)
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
JoJo (27:19)
her temperature? She started vomiting but couldn't lift herself up, so she's just laying in her own vomit. I'm like, and she needs a quiet spot. It's just overstimulating I was so mad trying to manage this.
Angie (27:34)
Yeah.
Yep.
JoJo (27:34)
Twelve hours later,
she's just not regulating. She's going from a hundred three point five temperature to ninety-seven with a heated blanket on. So I was like, I need you to put her in the car and I need you to take her to the ER because I'm not gonna sleep. I'm so worried about her. She's not regulating. They can regulate her temperature, maybe give her some fluids, maybe help her not vomit. And
Angie (27:56)
Yeah.
JoJo (27:57)
ten minutes later I call.
And I'm like, are you on the way? Because I've called them and let them know you're on the way. He's like, I don't think she really needs to go. She's just having a trip.
Angie (28:05)
no.
JoJo (28:05)
At which point we're in the middle of a little Guatemalan village using every explicitive word. Explicitive? Is that a word? Explicitive? Explicitive word. Choice words with this kid. He
Angie (28:21)
Yeah. Yeah.
JoJo (28:22)
finally gets her there and he's like, they told me this is just normal. And I'm like, normal means
Angie (28:28)
No.
JoJo (28:28)
common. Right? It is normal what she's experiencing.
Yeah, so they just gave her an antiemetic basically. That's it and sent her home. And said if she starts having
Angie (28:36)
That's it? And sent her home? my god, so the
JoJo (28:40)
seizures And I'm like, but you're not gonna even notice 'cause you didn't notice any of this. I was so mad. This poor little girl went on quite the ride.
But she's fine.
Angie (28:49)
Like the one time
we needed them to come through for us. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
JoJo (28:53)
I was like, I just wanted them to monitor her overnight and keep her comfortable. Ugh.
Fast forward, Angie Like, I don't know, s eight days later, seven days later, I get a call from said kid. Sage's face is super, super swollen and drooping on one side. And we have had
Angie (29:13)
Mm. ciao ciao.
JoJo (29:15)
our other dog got bit by a rattlesnake in our yard and presented the same way.
Angie (29:20)
Mm-hmm.
JoJo (29:20)
And he's like,
and she just doesn't seem to be able to hold her head right.
Angie (29:23)
Mm.
JoJo (29:24)
He's like, I can't find a snake. I'm like, great, just put her in the car, go back to the ER. if her face is swelling, we just need to have that taken care of. This one he rushes her there. She tries to bite everybody. they have to completely sedate her. And it turns out it's just she probably got a wasp sting.
Swallowed a wasp something. They couldn't find anything. So it's just a Benadryl injection. But it cost me $700 because
Angie (29:48)
No.
JoJo (29:49)
she needs to be sedated. What else can go wrong? It was I mean those were just with the dog, the things that went wrong. Worst worst pet sitter, worst house sitter I've ever had in my life.
Angie (30:02)
Is
he fired?
JoJo (30:04)
I would like to fire him. Husband and I are in disagreement.
Angie (30:08)
What?
I should write a prescription. Firing him. If we put it on a prescription pad, it's official.
JoJo (30:15)
I don't even know what to do. I was such bad care. And
Angie (30:19)
Well yeah.
JoJo (30:20)
okay, but I did get pet insurance. I
Angie (30:23)
Yeah.
JoJo (30:23)
did. Shout out to Lemonade. So easy. I don't know if that's who you use too. Like reimbursed
Angie (30:29)
That's who I use. Yeah.
JoJo (30:31)
within two hours.
Angie (30:33)
Yeah. No, they're right away. They're on it. I love them.
JoJo (30:36)
And I didn't know if they were gonna pay for the sedation 'cause of her thing. But now she's not right. She's just mean. She's wetting the bed. She's not right.
Angie (30:45)
I wonder, okay, not to plug her things that we sell. I wonder if we should give her some C B D. Like the THC should be
JoJo (30:51)
I too.
Angie (30:52)
gone. But like if your dog ever does overdose on THC, if you give them C B D, like high doses of C B D, sometimes it can help knock the THC out of the receptors. so I wonder if we should give her some C B D. Because I wonder if her Yeah. Like I wonder if
JoJo (31:06)
Like higher dose. Yeah.
Angie (31:09)
we should give her like 30 milligrams twice a day for a while.
And just do
JoJo (31:13)
I could do that.
She I mean, she hasn't left under my desk, and that's not normal for her. And she's been super dog aggressive. It's
Angie (31:22)
Yeah.
JoJo (31:23)
been weird. She's not herself at all. But
Angie (31:25)
Yeah.
JoJo (31:26)
I feel so bad for her. I
Angie (31:29)
Yeah.
JoJo (31:29)
was like, I think I'm in Guatemala, and she's You guys are never coming back, so I'm just gonna kill myself. Like that's what it felt like. Like super dramatic. Like I'm gonna find a way to get you to come
Angie (31:40)
my god.
JoJo (31:41)
home.
Like, hey, I'm in the hospital again, you guys. Like are you ever coming for me?
Angie (31:46)
Yeah. I'm making
bad life choices in hopes he'll come rescue me. Aww.
JoJo (31:51)
yeah, that was what made me mad too,
'cause he was just like, she he was telling her, You shouldn't have done that. That wasn't yours and I'm like, Don't don't yell at the high dog. Like, what is wrong with you? It was
Angie (32:01)
Yeah. No. Yeah, you can't
JoJo (32:03)
a cookie, dude.
Angie (32:05)
it's not on it's not on her to not eat.
JoJo (32:09)
I felt so bad. Can you imagine having your temperature drop that much? Like
Angie (32:12)
No.
JoJo (32:13)
go up and then drop and then up and then drop. It's just n it cannot feel good. And somebody playing
Angie (32:18)
I would
JoJo (32:19)
drums and a guitar. Ugh.
Angie (32:21)
I would have to be hospitalized
if I took a hundred milligrams of THC.
JoJo (32:25)
I've been hospitalized for much less THC.
I have a mother of the year award for the first time I took an edible and got wheel I got ambulanced
Angie (32:35)
Remember that story.
JoJo (32:37)
out of Disneyland. Super cool. Little mermaid. I'm going down. No, you're not. Yep, I am. So I feel extra sensitive to the fact that she had that cookie.
Angie (32:49)
Yes, yes.
JoJo (32:51)
And I feel like making that kid eat ten of them. You know, remember those old Disney I don't know if it was Donald Duck when he started smoking and his uncle's like, here, you have to smoke the whole pack till you're sick, and all the little nephews were all smoking all their cigarettes till they're sick. That's what I feel like doing to this kid. Like, you go eat a dozen cookies, and then I'm gonna turn
Angie (33:10)
Yeah.
JoJo (33:11)
on all the best music, the loud as I can, and a disco ball, and you have a great
Angie (33:15)
Right.
JoJo (33:16)
time. Tell you you just you're just having a trip.
Angie (33:19)
I know, it's so hard to teach empathy, isn't it?
JoJo (33:22)
Yeah, and you can see that on our YouTube channel, right? When we talked about THC and people are like, Dogs love getting high. I always give my dog THC and I blow smoke in my dog's face and I'm like, What's wrong with people? It's mean.
Angie (33:34)
Don't do that. Don't do that.
Yeah, we do we do not need to get your dogs high. Don't get your dogs high. It does not feel good for them. Mm mm. Mm mm. Mm hmm. It did. Yeah, she was
JoJo (33:39)
And your dog doesn't want to be high. It's so cruel. Her experience felt cruel to me. That she had to like
there was no way off that train.
Angie (33:50)
No, she was not having a good time. It was a bad time. my gosh.
JoJo (33:52)
Mm. Yeah. So come at us like
terrible pet parents.
Angie (33:57)
know. I wonder what people are gonna
say. I mean, probably that I smile too much. I'm gonna
JoJo (34:02)
I just laughed
my whole way through that story because I didn't know how to filter my words.
I'm so mad. I'm so mad about all of it. And now I have
Angie (34:12)
Yeah.
JoJo (34:12)
a dog who's probably even more terrified of veterinary care. And
Angie (34:15)
Yeah. Yeah.
JoJo (34:17)
so I canceled my appointment with you this week. I'm just like, I'm not gonna put her under sedation again. And
Angie (34:23)
No.
JoJo (34:24)
I called the ER and said, hey, trim her nails. Trim her nails. Which is so taboo to be like.
Angie (34:27)
Yeah. I know. Well, I feel like they with
a dog that needs to be sedated to be touched
JoJo (34:33)
Yeah.
Angie (34:34)
at all, I think that's like so understandable. Yeah.
JoJo (34:36)
I'm like, yeah, just sedate
her 'cause they didn't even have to give her a reversal 'cause as soon as they started trimming her nails, she's like, hell no Right up. She didn't need a reversal. Yeah. Absolutely.
Angie (34:43)
my gosh, she was one of those dogs that didn't need a reversal. That's good to know for when we sedate her.
Not a cheap drunk, doesn't need to be reversed, doesn't want to take the nap.
JoJo (34:55)
No, the
opposite of my other dog who was such a cheap drunk and we're like, You ever coming back? Like, so
Angie (34:59)
Yeah. Yeah.
JoJo (35:04)
that's our drama.
Angie (35:06)
Yes. We would like to hear your drama. We wanna know what's happening for you. And you can let me know, now that you know that I've overdosed my girlfriend's dog, if you would ever bring your animal to me. 'Cause I'm pretty sure is everyone just gonna
JoJo (35:19)
And that I have a pothead
in the house that I let take care of my dog, do you trust me?
Angie (35:24)
We're
sh should we be fired? It's over. I know.
JoJo (35:26)
This is a scary episode.
Luckily, everybody will have heard yours and they won't make it to the end to mine. Ha ha ha.
Angie (35:34)
Do you think so? They're gonna be like
so appalled.
JoJo (35:38)
Like you you did the first twenty minutes. Nobody ever makes the past twenty minutes.
Angie (35:42)
I know. I mean I just aired my dirty laundry on YouTube.
JoJo (35:46)
Yeah.
Angie (35:47)
But I mean, I hope it just like helps people understand that we're just people. I'm just a person. But
JoJo (35:51)
Yep. And I think
it makes us less judgmental 'cause how can we judge?
Angie (35:58)
Yeah, it's all happened. I I mean, I've had colleagues that have made much bigger mistakes it happen. So
JoJo (36:03)
for sure. It happens.
Angie (36:06)
Yeah. So we want to hear what's happened with your pets this past week or whenever you're listening to this, maybe you listen to this in two years, but we wanna hear what you're going through now that you've been there for us and supported us on our journey with our own pets. anything else, JoJo, before we wrap it up?
JoJo (36:23)
No, I don't think so. That felt like a lot.
Angie (36:26)
Okay. It was. Okay, see you next time.
JoJo (36:29)
Bye.
