Tails of Truth: The Truth about Veterinary Medicine

Why We Started Tails of Truth and Are Excited to Continue

Dr. Angie Krause, DVM CVA CCRT Episode 38

Tell Us What You Think

In this special year-end episode of Tails of Truth, integrative veterinarian Dr. Angie Krause and veterinary nurse JoJo reflect on everything that made 2025 such a meaningful year—for the podcast, for their work in veterinary medicine, and for the pet parents who tune in each week.

What started as casual, honest conversations between two veterinary professionals quickly became a trusted space for real talk about pet health, holistic care, and the realities of modern veterinary medicine. In this episode, Angie and JoJo pull back the curtain on what it takes to build a podcast from scratch—without a production team, without a script, and without an agenda beyond sharing useful, compassionate information.

They discuss consistency, vulnerability, growth, burnout, learning new skills, launching a new website, navigating change in veterinary careers, and why unscripted conversations matter so much in an industry that often feels rushed. Most importantly, they reaffirm their mission: to empower pet parents, support veterinarians, and make people feel more confident and informed about caring for their animals.

This episode is an invitation—to listen, to learn, to subscribe, and to join a growing community that values honesty, curiosity, and better conversations around pet health and veterinary medicine.

To close out the year, Dr. Angie and JoJo also share two special gifts for listeners: 10% off a veterinary consultation and free access to any pre-recorded course, as a thank-you for being part of the Tails of Truth community. Listen for your discount codes to be used at www.boulderholisticvet.com

Dr. Angie Krause (00:00)
Welcome back to Tails of Truth where we tell the truth about veterinary medicine. I'm Dr. Angie. I'm an integrative veterinarian and this is my co-host Jojo, veterinary nurse extraordinaire. And today we are recapping 2025. It is December 8th and we are recording for the last time this year.

JoJo (00:22)
that's kind of exciting. We have recorded so many episodes with so much consistency.

Dr. Angie Krause (00:28)
Yes. Yeah, we started a podcast this year. We did so many things this year, but we started this podcast and it was born from the fact that Jojo and I have all these really great conversations and one day we're like, we should just be recording these. And so we finally did it. We got organized enough and we started it and launched it. And now we're learning how to podcast.

JoJo (00:49)
Well, you, came from, partially came from, we were gonna record it with no expectation. Like this was just our happy play time, really. We were face to face, chatting from our basements about all the things we're chatting about anyhow. But you had done a business consultation and I can't remember if it was at the beginning of this year, but you did a business consultation and.

Dr. Angie Krause (00:57)
Yes.

Well,

okay, we had already started recording that podcast. Yeah, so that was already underway when I consulted with someone about our website. So we knew our website was like, we were trying to be our own webmasters. We were like, we need to get away from WordPress. What do we do? So we consulted with someone about the website and she was like, you know, I told her it like, we're doing a podcast. want the podcast on the website. And so she.

JoJo (01:14)
⁓ had we? Yeah.

Dr. Angie Krause (01:35)
She definitely said, like, people want to hear what you're talking about. And it turns out that's true. And sometimes I'm still surprised by that. Like, I'll tell people like, yeah, we had X number of downloads. And I'm like, all those people wanted to listen to us.

JoJo (01:41)
Right?

I know. Okay, but y'all, you need to subscribe. Help us out in 2026.

Dr. Angie Krause (01:54)
I should subscribe. I don't know that I have subscribed. ⁓

JoJo (01:57)
Shoot,

I don't know if I have either. Okay, we'll do it if you do it.

Dr. Angie Krause (02:01)
I know.

So what happens if we get more subscribers? just for everyone to know, we didn't start this podcast for any other reason than it was just our therapy time. And so we're kind of learning as we go. But JoJo, what happens if we get more subscribers?

JoJo (02:19)
Well, it's just for their benefit. Well, it also gives me just a little, not an ego boost, but just a little of, keep going. I see the views, but it does help other people find us.

Dr. Angie Krause (02:27)
Yeah.

It does. Okay. And Jojo

has like gotten into, basically managing and producing this podcast. Jojo's amazing. And I just have to brag on you. Like you're a great nurse. you're a great writer. You can organize anything. I mean, she keeps me organized all the time in a very gentle way. And

She can make any system better. So it wasn't surprising. Like you've learned how to do search engine optimization on our website and now you're learning a new platform. Like Jojo can really do anything. And so it's no surprise that she's just like now I'm the podcast producer and every week she does it better and better. And so, I mean, it's been amazing to watch you just.

JoJo (03:13)
I have seen

that growth. that true? Like I have seen from our first episodes to where we are now. And I know in 2026 where I want to go in terms of I would love for our freeze frames at the beginning of these episodes to be not one where like my head's up in your head. There are so many things I know I still need to learn, but it is I tell Angie it's one thing a week right now. One thing a week. like, ⁓ we can do this.

Dr. Angie Krause (03:19)
Yes!

Yeah.

JoJo (03:39)
⁓ YouTube has a different optimization than Instagram. It's interesting to be of a medical mindset learning the technical world. It is all another language, you guys.

Dr. Angie Krause (03:48)
Right.

It's a whole nother language. so Jojo's amazing. And the reason why we're doing it is because we want to get the information we have, because we're always having great conversations with a lot of, I mean, just gold for, for people with pets and for people to understand the veterinary industry. And so we do all this because we want it to reach you. And there's a lot of strategy in getting a podcast out there. And we don't have, we don't have anyone.

working for us. Like this is the first year. It is just JoJo and I. So anything that's happening is like mostly JoJo, but like it's just the two of us. No one else is helping us do any of this.

JoJo (04:30)
No, I mean, we

do have a web development team. did build the site.

Dr. Angie Krause (04:34)
Correct, we did not build our website. We did not do that.

JoJo (04:38)
Although I think we

could have. I don't think we could have done all the migration.

Dr. Angie Krause (04:40)
my gosh.

The migration was a nightmare. Wait, still is. If you're on subscription, let us help you get moved over. Cause once you move over it, it's like so much better than the other site. But yeah, I know we're pretty good at a lot of things, but yeah, they did. They did build our new site for us, but we manage it now. They don't, no one's managing our site for us.

JoJo (04:46)
still is. Yes.

Yeah, it's been what we need new titles. Like Dr. Angie, I am a integrative veterinarian, tech savvy female boss beast. what was like, are we going to call? We got to, there's got to be special letters after your name for all of that.

Dr. Angie Krause (05:06)
I

my gosh. Yeah.

There's gotta be, there's gotta be special letters. Yeah, I started working in a new clinic this year. So I went from house calls, we had a house call business, and then we stopped doing that, because it was for so many reasons, that's probably another episode. And then I started doing relief work while we were trying to figure out who we were, and so it was like dating. And then I found this amazing fit.

at Boulder's Natural Animal and I've been there and I'm actually about ready to pick up more days. I'm going to be there more. We started this podcast.

JoJo (05:50)
We launched a new website, did a podcast, you're in a new clinic. my goodness, it's been a lot. But it went by so fast, this year flew by. And I just said this morning, I said, I got up like really happy this morning that it's Monday because I like my job. Yeah, that's a pretty ⁓ good place to be.

Dr. Angie Krause (05:52)
and launched a new website.

I can't believe we did all that.

JoJo (06:15)
Not always. But I can call Angie on those days and be like, I really hate my job. And hopefully it doesn't freak you out too much on those days. I think we both scare each other sometimes.

Dr. Angie Krause (06:15)
Natalie.

Yes.

mean, of course, like, I always want

to rescue you, you know, like I never, like, I always want you to feel good and feel supported. And sometimes it's hard with just two of us. Like when one of us is drowning, like it's sometimes not always possible for the other person to make things go away because one of the two of us has to do it.

JoJo (06:43)
Yeah, so on the days

when both of us are just like, uh-huh, uh-oh, yeah, it's, we, have to just look at each other and say, okay, what's, what's the one or two things that we're going to get done.

Dr. Angie Krause (06:49)
Yeah.

Right, yeah, what's important right now? I think there's a lot of that conversation happening and yeah.

JoJo (06:59)
Yeah, which

our clients are always first and foremost they get the attention. Yep. And then this podcast has just become my baby in terms of, and she'll say, you know, it'll be okay if you don't put out an episode this week. I'm like, yeah, it's not okay. Not okay. This is like, we have been so consistent.

Dr. Angie Krause (07:04)
100%. Yes.

No sh-

You have been so consistent.

JoJo (07:20)
No, you're here. You have to record.

can't record myself. and poor Angie, because we're talking about it, because, and I'm not calling you Dr. Angie on this episode, because today you're going to be Angie. ⁓ Poor Angie. Like, I'll put out clips on social media. She's like, ⁓ God, did you have to do that clip? Because we've gotten to the point that I'm not asking permission for everything, because otherwise it was just stall. And...

Dr. Angie Krause (07:24)
Yeah.

No.

No. Mm-hmm.

JoJo (07:48)
so I'm sorry for the things that haven't felt good.

Dr. Angie Krause (07:50)
Well, I think sometimes it's hard to watch yourself on video. And yeah, I'm used to producing things for pet food companies. We're either like, have a production company around me, or like when I've done live TV, you have artists and you have people framing the shot. We are doing none of that here. We're just showing up in our basement. Some days we look better than others. Sometimes our mics are weird, and sometimes the camera angle is really wrong, and then it's just.

JoJo (07:53)
It's always hard to watch yourself on video.

Dr. Angie Krause (08:16)
awful to keep watching that, at the end of the day, I understand that no one cares. They just want the information from us, hopefully. Hopefully.

JoJo (08:25)
That is true because I

hope that's true because sometimes I have to cut out like just a little line and then it makes Angie like glitch out for a second and I cannot figure out. cannot for the life of me figure out and we're not going to pay somebody to figure that out because we're going to be low budget so that we can keep giving this to you for free.

Dr. Angie Krause (08:33)
Yeah.

Right. Right. Cause we actually don't have the budget for a podcast production. There's no budget except for your budget. And you know, that's like, we don't, the goal for this podcast has never been like, we're to make a podcast and then monetize it. have zero plan other than to enjoy our conversation and, and put it out there. So there's not like some big scheme.

JoJo (08:48)
Right, low budget is the no budget.

Great.

Dr. Angie Krause (09:10)
You know, this was an important piece for me that I wasn't as a entrepreneur thinking, okay, how am I going to make this have an ROI? It was the first project I had that wasn't trying to build anything other than I just wanted to do it with you.

JoJo (09:27)
Well, in the moment that you told me, let's make an agenda, both of us did not sleep that night. Neither one of us, we showed up like, well, I don't want to do this. Like it just sucked all the fun out of it. And so I think the magic, yeah, the script, was like, and we need to make sure that there's clips with like certain, and I'm sure there are podcasters that are doing this, like that are thinking about what to capture and what needs to be said.

Dr. Angie Krause (09:35)
yes.

Yeah, because I was like, we should get a script.

Yeah.

JoJo (09:55)
So I know if we look back on 2025, I have wanted to say this, I'm sure we have said things that might be incorrect.

And it's just, that's okay. Like not like wrong medications or something. I mean, just, you know, maybe a statistic wasn't exactly accurate. Or I probably said a drug name wrong because that's been my MO lately.

Dr. Angie Krause (10:03)
Sorry.

Well, I'm always worried about the things that I'm going to say that are correct in 2025. And then in 2029, it's not going to be medically correct anymore. So sometimes I lose a little sleep over that where I'm like, Oh gosh, that maybe that's not going to be the wisdom, but I it's okay. Like you just have to let it go. And, you know, just like the weird way our faces freeze for like the thumbnails, it's, you just have to be like, well, it is what it is.

JoJo (10:29)
yeah.

Dr. Angie Krause (10:45)
We're not professional podcasters.

JoJo (10:46)
Yeah, it's hard. You are so lucky that you don't have to edit these. Like I tell Angie, usually by Friday, I dislike us. I'm so bored with our voices and I don't want to look at myself for one more minute. It is really challenging to be a middle-aged woman on camera.

Dr. Angie Krause (10:49)
We don't have a PR team.

Yeah.

yeah, and we do it regularly. Like we probably record every other week and we're recording on days. Like right now I have a kid upstairs with influenza. and I've taken another kid to school and I, know, like my cats are all over me and you know, maybe my hair didn't work out or like, you know, some days we just feel terrible. didn't get enough sleep or whatever. can't even like form a sentence, but we just keep showing up because this is what our life is. This is real. These are real conversations.

JoJo (11:32)
Well,

the real conversations. So in going forward, can I talk about going forward? Some of the things I'm excited about? Or do you have like more things from 20? Just 2025 to me was a stellar year. And I'm surprised saying that because there were two of us. But somehow being remote, I was able to go to Switzerland with a kid this year. I traveled quite a bit actually. And

Dr. Angie Krause (11:41)
Bye.

It was a stellar year.

Yes. Yeah. You did.

JoJo (11:58)
I don't know. mean, you've had years like that, but not like where you've had more travel. This was not a travel year for you at all. This Angie worked her, I don't want to edit. Angie worked her tush off this year. Like, can we just acknowledge that. I am really impressed with how many hours you put into the grind and still show up. Yeah, it's a.

Dr. Angie Krause (12:04)
This is not a travel.

Yeah.

Yeah,

thank you. Yep.

JoJo (12:24)
There was a lot, she had to pay for

this website. She has to pay me. And it doesn't matter if the money's coming in or not. Like she still has to cut the checks. So yeah, I always feel bad about that sometimes. just like, I wish there was a way I could offset that, but I also don't want to work for free. So.

Dr. Angie Krause (12:29)
Mm-hmm.

Right. Yeah.

No, exactly. You don't want to work for free. No, no, no, we're not going to do that.

JoJo (12:48)
Yeah, I love my job,

but not for free, I think. Yeah. So I think, yeah, you put so much effort into keeping everything above water this year.

Dr. Angie Krause (12:51)
Yeah, you can't do that.

Yes, because we made some really big moves that cost money. And I had to work and I'm still working to pay for that. I'll probably be working on next year too, which is fine.

JoJo (13:13)
Yeah, I think I think 2026

is a not I hate to say that sounds negative, like get out of the hole year, but it is like, these were all an investment. It's about maybe 2027. We'll have some ROI.

Dr. Angie Krause (13:26)
Yeah.

That's what I'm thinking. Although I don't really know how our podcasts would ever have ROI. And that's, that's the piece. And I am okay not thinking about that.

JoJo (13:40)
Right, I think that's the magic.

Dr. Angie Krause (13:42)
It's the magic. Just like we're not going to script it out. We're not going to have some big plan to monetize. We're going to hang out, you and I, and next year we have guests scheduled. We're going to...

JoJo (13:52)
That's where I was headed. was like,

Whoa, that's gonna be next level.

Dr. Angie Krause (13:58)
We have some really cool people we're hanging out with. And I'm a little bit nervous for the tech piece, because you and I can just do whatever we want. We edit out whatever. And we might need to have my friend Justin come on. He's an audio engineer. I might need to take him to lunch and be like, will you please be with us? And so we're going to bring on some pretty high profile people and just people that I want to hang out with and talk to.

JoJo (14:05)
same.

Dr. Angie Krause (14:26)
And so things will get more interesting in 2026.

JoJo (14:30)
Yeah, I'm really excited for that. I've been thinking a lot about who we know and who we would like to bring on and what the conversations are that people want to hear. And I'm hoping at least one of these guests ended up in your inbox wanting to be on. And I'm like, man, I hope that he can just shoot the... I want to be so relaxed that I just...

Dr. Angie Krause (14:45)
Mm-hmm.

Yeah

JoJo (14:55)
the way I normally speak but I hope that he can just roll because we are not scripted and I want our guests to come on not scripted.

Dr. Angie Krause (14:58)
Yes.

we're going to, I know we're not going to script it. And I thought about that as I was getting ready for the podcast this morning. I'm like, I think we have to stay pretty unscripted because it is part of it. And we're, we're telling the truth. We're, we're kind of looking behind the curtain and we're telling sometimes the hard truths and, it's not going to be a superscripted podcast. It's going to be very conversational. And there are things that I'm going to learn from all of these people too. I'm really excited about.

JoJo (15:30)
That is exciting. I also have it on my 2026 vision board to make it to some kind of expo just to be. It's fun to go to these veterinary expos and have just all of the new and up and coming industry best to see what's out there. And so I'm thinking a little bit about that.

Dr. Angie Krause (15:47)
Mm-hmm. Would you want to do

a veterinary one or like a podcasting one? Because you know they have podcasting expo's like Buzzsprout has a podcasting expo in Orlando.

JoJo (15:53)
⁓ I didn't know that.

Ew, how does that work?

Dr. Angie Krause (16:00)
I don't know.

JoJo (16:02)
In

2026, I do want to get to a point where we are sitting in comfy chairs.

Dr. Angie Krause (16:06)
Do I get to a blanket over my lap? ⁓

JoJo (16:07)
having a conversation.

Yeah, and coffee.

And I just noticed how much I just visited on this episode, how many times I moved my microphone because I'm on a chair that pivots, that doesn't give me good posture.

Dr. Angie Krause (16:20)
Totally.

Well, what I want to know is how people, they have the same brand of microphone. They sit on a couch and for this microphone to work, I have to be this close to it. How are they doing? ⁓ they're holding it.

JoJo (16:34)
Well, have you seen they're holding microphones now? Which I do

not want to do.

Dr. Angie Krause (16:39)
my gosh, I'm gonna mess that up.

JoJo (16:40)
⁓ And I will just have it like I talk with my hand so

much it'll be all over the place. I mean, have you seen how many times I've adjusted? So anyhow, those are goals. I want to see in 2026 more people find their way to your calendar for consultations. Because I have seen that if we're going to use the word magic like it is.

Dr. Angie Krause (16:48)
Yeah, I do.

Yes.

JoJo (17:02)
a magical place to be in that space with Dr. Angie because she really does piece apart what's happening for your animal. So much so that I watch all these consultations afterwards or at least listen to them because I always learn something. Because it's so unique to every single individual that the conversation is never the exact same. You could do 10 IBD kitties and the conversation is not the same.

Dr. Angie Krause (17:14)
Hmm.

It's true. Yeah, because the magic is I'm understanding the cat, the people, their situation, their stage in life, their financial means. And we're, making really custom plans. And one thing I will say is that most people at the end of consultation with me will say, I feel so much better. Thank you for helping me be more clear. And most people feel more empowered and better. That's something that they commonly say at the end.

And so.

JoJo (17:51)
Yeah, we

don't talk about them enough. And I love this. This is one of my favorite things that we have put together because one, it reaches people that don't have access to an integrative vet or holistic vet. Veterinary medicine has gotten so fast paced that a lot of the people that show up for consultations have been handed all of this information without any explanation of what any of it means for them, for their pet.

Dr. Angie Krause (18:06)
Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Yes.

JoJo (18:19)
what the landscape of even certain medications means for them. And so you get 45 dedicated minutes with Dr. Angie where she can answer every single question. And so some people are coming in with questions from multiple pets in their household and that's welcome too. It's not, you have 45 minutes only to talk about this one thing. It's what questions are you having? And so people do feel really empowered. I think that's a good word.

Dr. Angie Krause (18:39)
yeah.

JoJo (18:47)
or at least settled and they understand what's happening and they have clear answers and then they follow up for 20 minutes if they have more questions. So Dr. Angie just really becomes a part of the extended team.

Dr. Angie Krause (18:47)
Yes.

Yes. Yep. I agree.

JoJo (19:00)
And I even think

that most veterinarians are finding that beneficial too, because you're taking the time to do what they probably want to do.

Dr. Angie Krause (19:07)
Yes.

JoJo (19:07)
for their clients but don't have the space and time.

Dr. Angie Krause (19:09)
Absolutely. Yes. They want their clients to have all these questions answered. And sometimes it's just a personal fit too. Maybe the way I say things is easier for them to understand. I think having more than one veterinarian on your team can be really helpful.

JoJo (19:26)
I would say those are my two favorite things, this podcast and the consultations.

Dr. Angie Krause (19:32)
Yeah. Yeah. Well.

JoJo (19:33)
Those are

my two favorite things. Newsletter's probably my least favorite, but I'll keep putting it out.

Dr. Angie Krause (19:38)
I know because when we send out a newsletter, it's very techie because we are, we're sending out cat content to the cat people, both to, you know, both. then, you know, so, there's a lot of tech that goes into even just loading that. And we got a new, email system, which has been hard. ⁓

JoJo (19:42)
huh.

Yeah, I do feel really excited you guys when you respond. I do. It makes me feel like it's being read and it's landed and Dr. Angie puts a lot of good content out. So we sign up for our newsletter list, subscribe to our podcast, share the podcast. Yeah. What else?

Dr. Angie Krause (20:07)
Yes, it does make us feel good. Yeah.

Yes.

Yeah,

2025 was a great year.

JoJo (20:22)
It was a great year all around. I feel we're gonna close it out in a really solid way. And 2026 is already just lined up to be superb.

Dr. Angie Krause (20:31)
Gosh, this conversation makes me feel so much better. It's like helping my Monday blues go away. Like I'm like fired up for 2026 now.

JoJo (20:39)
Yeah, except then you have to go do shipments today. I usually do all of our shipments and Dr. Angie has all of our product right now, which is why I am loaded up with plants behind me, which, how do I keep this? Because it's so pretty. ⁓ The rest of my house is bare.

Dr. Angie Krause (20:42)
No. ⁓

Right.

I know, you're gonna go on vacation.

Well, if we're gonna tell all this plant behind me is fake because we're in the basement and I can't grow anything down here. It doesn't get enough light or I'm not good enough. I don't know, it needs a lamp on it. So this is, in the basement you gotta do the fake plants.

JoJo (21:05)
Yeah.

I mean that

plant is a basement plant that way where'd my hand go that way Yeah

Dr. Angie Krause (21:14)
it does? Okay. It's like a pathos.

And it, ⁓ I have some of those. Maybe I could put those all around me. It'd make me happier.

JoJo (21:19)
Yeah, I don't know. It's

doing it, it's growing. Which by the way, that pot, do you remember? A client gave me that pot.

Dr. Angie Krause (21:25)
Okay.

Yes.

JoJo (21:31)
So

I think about her every time I'm down in the basement.

Dr. Angie Krause (21:34)
that. Okay, well, we have a couple offers for you to close out this year. We are offering you 10 % off your next consult. If you go to boulderholisticvet.com and you go to book a consultation in, is it consult 10? Okay, the code consult 10, you can get 10 % off.

JoJo (21:51)
Yep, that will work.

Dr. Angie Krause (21:56)
And then you can get any course we have put out our pre-recorded courses for free using the code truth tales either spelled TALES or TAILS.

JoJo (22:08)
Two offerings, that's a good way to end it.

Dr. Angie Krause (22:09)
Okay.

Yes, we'll see you next year. Bye.

JoJo (22:15)
Bye.
